I really prefer to play in person because I play better on a real board than on a floating 2d diagram. Also, I like to be able to discuss the game afterwords, moving pieces around with my opponent doing the same. Post-mortems on-line are less common and less convenient.
do you like playing chess more online or in-person??
The best way to play chess, in my opinion, is to play opposite a real, live, and breathing person on a physical chessboard. I have done it online, (or using a computer program), many times; but, over-the-board is the best!
Playing OTB is the way to go because of emotional, psychological and clock time constraint which adds an element of pressure to the game.

OTB but online has been better for me because... 1) I only have 2 places to play where I live, a cigar shop and a bar thats currently closed and 2) dont know anyone around here that can give me a good game. So online chess is the simple solution to both.

Otb is what I rehearse for when online. In my club there are players in all ages from 9 to ca 90.
I like the social stuff after the game, sush as analyzing and talking.
I like the thrill of a match under four eyes.
I like online too.
despite playing the game from a young age (chess club at school, online after school), i ultimately became disengaged during high school when i could no longer find new friends to play and/or got tired of staring at a computer screen in online matches. i missed the human element -- emotions, intensity, solidarity, shaking hands.
there's no doubt online chess is more convenient and efficiently pairs you with players of the same skill level, but does anyone else prefer in-person matches? how do people value online vs. in-person matches? why do people that prefer in-person matches resort to online solutions?
