Wow batgirl, these are VERY hard. I mean really, there is NO WAY anyone from this era could get all of these right. I can't make out some of them but I'm curious, how many did YOU get right before seeing the answers? ;-)

Yes, these are hard... and some of the answers are rather strange. I'll post the solution tomorrow as no one seems all that interested in guessing. I only knew a handful but it does give a taste of the time and as DarklingSalmon noted we can also acertain a few things.
I was looking something up in "Chess Review" and came across this crossword puzzle in the July 1934 issue. While it is, of course, dated and possibly U.S.-centric, if anyone is interested in figuring out the answers, I'll wait a few days before posting the answers (right-clicking to "view image" will give a slightly larger image).
