Database Use is Unfair

The old tradition of using research to jocky for positional advantage in corresondence chess, which grew into massive database use in turn-based chess, is unfair. It is especially so to newbs who never mailed a postcard with "1.P-KB3, if any, 2.KB2." These newbs want to play chess as if it is a game for real men who revel in thier own masculinity instead of the sissy skills of trying to become smarter through study.

What can we do about a playing field that unfairly tilts towards eggheads and bores and others who want to be smarter than their ancestors?

You can always play without your queen if you want, but everyone else can still use theirs.

I think Black should be able to use DB to offset first move advantage.

BTW, Ziryab, I just found a 5 year old comment of yours in TT, about a puzzle rembling the famous Reti study, remember that? Laughing

Vaguely. The Reti study is very familiar, and I see variations on it every few months during tactics training. I leave very few comments on TT and can almost remember writing that one.

You mean the drawn king and pawn endgame where the king must do an amazing run?  That was crazy!

I eat a lot of Pacific salmon, raw tuna, and Matjes. The Omega-3 is brain food. Keeps me a little bit ahead of most of my countrymen who watch television news.

I´m trying to understand all those confusing math posts in the other threads, and I think that they are trying to say this:

* Ivanov is the good guy, he has been forced to retire by the greedy corporations and the ego driven bulgarian GMs (chessbase et al) and Lilov got his IM title due to the powers behind the curtain and an engine in his shoes. Only wikipedia is trying to resist to the power of Lilov Inc.

I got it right?

Wikipedia is the final arbiter of all things true and significant. It's not math, it's counting.

I'm no fan of the big power structure, but Ivanov should give it a rest already!  The statistical proof speaks for itself.  Where is Polar Bear when you need him?

Add that to the other two and the world starts to make sense.

I'm new so this may be a dumbass question but when you say using a database in corespondence chess you're referring to looking up old games in Chessbase right? Not plugging the moves into Houdini or Komodo and asking the comp for the next move....
