Deciding Between 10m Rapid With Or Without Increment

Hello everyone.

I'm a fairly new player trying to improve my game, and I'm trying to decide whether to focus on the most popular rapid format (10m no increment) or going for 10|5 or 15|10.

I've been trying to play a mix of those, and I'm trying to understand why the no increment format is so popular. It feels like I loose many games just to time (or my opponent does), and I often don't get to play out the full endgame (and therefore learn and practice it).

I'd like to understand the upside of the format (why do people play 10m as opposed to 10|5?) if there is one. Or maybe it shows up only at higher ratings, and lower-rated players like me should focus on a format that allows them to think a bit more? There is obviously a balance between finding a good format for yourself and the depth of the player pool.

Give me your best pros/cons for the increment/no increment formats, or maybe the tradeoffs one should consider when picking a format to grow.

Cheers!

Try both and decide

10 minutes tends to be more popular then 10/5 because you have to click 'more time controls' to see it. 15/10 is quite popular, not as much as 10 min but still

15|10 is the best in the improvement-time balance. If you don’t have time for it, 10|5. 10|0 should actually be blitz but chess.com changed it, it's trash. I only played it because on my level (2000+) it's impossible to find opponents for anything longer than 10|0. But one well played and throughoutly analysed 15|10 game is much better than 2 10|5 games played without paying much attention. Quality>Quantity. I don't know why 10|0 is so popular, but time controls without increment are trash and unserious. But this is my humble opinion just as a mid amateur 2000+

15|10 is definitely better for improvement. Longer time controls would be better still, but those can be hard to find online.

I'm not trying to grind improvement, so I like 10|0 because I know the max time the game will take. I've got 30 minutes free? Okay, I can for sure get in a 10|0 game.
