Decline of skill with time off

How much and how quickly do chess skills decline with time away from the game? Do you think Kasparov could still compete reasonably well against strong GMs? Are there examples of top players who took significant time off, then returned and reached a similar or higher skill level?

do you know jeff sarwer? he finally returned a few years ago in a strong tourney I believe..

I took a 6 month break a while back and when I returned was rusty on my openings, but actually played better. chess brain training is like muscle training.. sometimes an extra rest day will add up.

@jarkov

I hadn't heard of Jeff Sarwer... really interesting story (wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Sarwer). Thanks for the response.

Fischer took a couple of long breaks from chess and when he returned he was even stronger than before.
