DEEP SHREDDER 12

I have recently bought a Mac Book Pro and have installed Deep Shredder 12 on it. i really like the program but was wonder when you analyise a game it is entirley different to what i have been getting with Fritz 12. Fritz 12 gives you plain english talk about the game and tells you where you went wrong etc. The Deep Shredder only gives you a print out with eg:

1.e4 +0.30/8 os e5 +0.13/9 0s

Now this means whites 1st move was worth 0.30 pawns and it was a 8 ply search and took 0secs. This is for the whole game and it does give you different variations and lines for the whole game but is there a way to get plain english??? or what is the best program for game analysis.

thanks heaps

Humble advice: forget about verbal explanations of fritz, they are worthless. The numerical evaluations are the best chess engines can offer. I'd suggest using infinite analysis (going through the game move by move yourself with the engine running) to analyze games.

I'm new to chess analysis.  I have the free Hudini engine running on Arena.  I play over the games and notice when the points really jump plus or minus.  There I can see something is going wrong and play over the variations to see how I could have punished my opponent or my opponent could have punished me.

I find it useful to learn how to capitalize on a winning advantage.  Its also useful in seeing defensive resources that may be available.

Fritz's plain english annotations are pretty much worthless.  Although I do think in more lighthearted moments, they're funny to read.

"Qd4?  The gates of victory were open, but white decided to walk right by."

"Ng5?? Strolling merrily down the path to disaster"

"g4?? sad, but how else could black save the game?"

"Bf4 doesn't get the bull off the ice"

etc

Fritz has usually been very insulting about my moves, just like above. I forgave it everything recently though, when it said of one of my moves

"RxN ! a beautiful end to the perfect game"

After that I thought "hey, Fritz really does know what it's talking about" Wink

getting used to the Deeps Shredder now, but there seems to be a big problem when i do an analysis of a game it seems to stall the program and then i have to force quit it and then lose the game details that i had input. Any ideas ?

thanks

When the engine locks your computer, instead of trying to close the software altogether, hit ctrl+alt+del, open the Task Manager, open the Processes tab, and then close the running .exe file of the engine. That way, you shouldn't have to restart the software.

Another thing I'd suggest is that, if it freezes too frequently, try to limit the number of threads the engine works on. If you have a quad computer for example, you can limit the number of processors (or threads) of the engine to 2. To do that, you open the engine "parameters" of shredder.

I use shredder to analyze my games with a +-0.25 pawn threshold, so I see where I made a bad move.  Anything much lower than 0.25, I get sad about how many mistakes I make :(.
