Learn to anticipate how the enemy attacks and make moves that prepare for it. If you have any experience in attacking yourself (you should) you should be able to spot attacking ideas for the opponent. It's not as hard as it seems.

In fact the hardest part about making playing good defense is telling yourself you need to defend.

Try to exchange your badly placed pieces vs your opponent’s better placed and attacking piece(s). This way, he will have less piece (s) for attack and will give you a better chance to hold your position against strong attacks/aggressive play. This strategy is just one of the many ways to defend.
