What would be the best move for white against the Bird Variation

The most straightforward and easily the most popular is 4.Nxd4 exd4 5.0-0

Agreed, this is normal I think - from http://database.chessbase.com/js/apps/onlinedb/ this line has 57% for white, which can't be bad. Basically the Bird Variation isn't particularly great for black, just a bit of novelty value.

Coincidentally someone played this against me just now - so I thought I'd post the game - he tried a somewhat dodgy pawn storm - and ultimately the game swung on some blunders - I think I was probably on the best side of it just about anyhow.  Interested to hear what i've missed - no engines so probably a lot.

Not much book either - so very much patzer analysis - but you might come up against a similar try.

yeah, 22. Bxc7 Rxe2 23. Rxe2 Bxc7 (kxc7 Ne6+ Bxe6 fxe6 and it's bye bye f6 pawn) Nd6 Bxe6?! fxe6 re8 (be5? d4! ((Rf5 is also playable)) Rxf6 1-0. However your oppoent really doesn't know too much about defending a lost position into a tough win.  22. Qc5! giving tough resistance, though white does not play 23. b4!? axb4! and then if cxb4 Qxd4 Rc1+ Bc6 b5 with a foggy position, but either 23, Be3 or 23. Nb3, even so though there are plenty of ways to complicate the position making things unclear. Thus you are correct Qd2 is inaccurate.

To the oringinal poster i have a suggestion for fighting the bird (no not angry birds the video game though i think in that one you use the birds to kill the pigs, rather stupid if you ask me)

I like to throw pawns out there, f4 things like that, here is one variation i like to play.
