During many chess discussions and analyses, the concepts of 'tactical' and 'positional' play are frequently mentioned. However, it is rare when one tries to explain the meaning of these two words, and when they do, their definitions are often unclear and contradictory to each other. I would like to ask the experienced players, how can the 'tactical' and 'positional' elements of chess be comprehensively and accurately defined?

This is an oversimplification, but when moves have a forcing character and the opponents replies are limited, this is tactical play. When both sides have a variety of choices, the play is positional.

Tactics is what you do when there is something to do.

Strategy is what you do when there is nothing to do.

Tactics: short-term, the immediate goal is reached trough (usually) precisely calculated combination.

Strategy/positional: long-term, the goal is not immediately achieved in a clear manner through precise calculation.
