Describing a Personality With Chess

It's been said to me that when you play chess with someone, you are able to tell their tendencies, whether they're aggressive or passive, etc. I was wondering if this is actually true and how you can tell.

I'm a recreational chess player who honestly doesn't play that well nor do I play very often but I'm looking to learn!

Thanks.

Well......not in one game. Anyone may be aggressive if they see an opportunity for a significant advantage.

There's a lot more to a personality than can be expressed in a game, although you could tell some general things.  Just a game or two though and all you could really tell is their mood at the time.

How can you tell?  When there's a crossroads and they consistently prefer one method over another.  Preferring a sharp counterattack to defense or direct play vs quietly building up a position.

Some players will grab material and suffer a long positional bind believing they'll come out in the end.  Other's can't stand to defend and will find ways to counterattack.  Some build for the endgame, some try to squish you in the opening.

Probably the only common theme in all of it is (good) chess players are relentlessly trying to beat you... whether it's a slow boa constrictor crush or a quick tearing out your throat... chess is actually a pretty aggressive game Tongue out
