Well, to start off, I've played chees quite a few times in my past. I've had a course in 6th grade, and it was the big thing in high school, even with the "popular kids". I could always stand a good chance of winning, and the games were fun. I entered this site and tried to pick up a few games, but I'm getting completely obliterated. I tried the mentor and the puzzles and such, but none seemed to help, no matter how deeply I analyzed the moves. Can anyone help me...?

I notice that you have been a member of chess.com for two days...chess takes YEARS to learn. Perseverance is required.

Some idiot said, chess takes a few minutes to learn the rules, and a lifetime to master. Unfortunately, that idiot is right. To start off, you need to learn the basic principles. I thought I knew the game, but on first reading these, I found that it's a different ballgame altogether. I read the article on chess on the Encyclopaedia Britannica CD, which also has some great games with excellent commentary, but I'm sure there are less geeky ways to learn it on the Net. Another thing I did was play lots of games against the computer on this site.

CausticSoul,   I have enjoyed chess all my life. Hence my motto has always been to help others to play better chess!  I am not a chess-professional, although I could be one,  if I choose to.  I don't know your ratings and therefore cannot estimate your playing strength.  I can only give you a general guidance:  Choose to play the OPEN Games 1)e4 , e5;  to develop your tactical skills and combinative power.  Use the  web www.chess.com-tactics to practice. Then learn simple endgames technics. Make sure you know the general principles of Opening play! You will also need a good book of  annotated games like Irvin Chernev's  "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played".  Good-luck, my friend!
