Who are these mysterious "most people"?

"did carlsen get lucky again"

Um... I'm not sure that's an appropriate question to ask on a public forum.

InfiniteFlash

It is rather obvious that Nakamura is not as good as Carlsen. When I see their games (not against each other), it is apparent.

Their record against each other is just proof of their gap imo. In the last few years, I mean.

I think he means "most Americans". The percentage in a randomly chosen land, like Norway for instance, is probably slightly lower.

That's like asking NASA "Have you probed Uranus"?

A pretty personal question, IMO.

Oraoradeki

Yes and No.

Chess players usually have several nemeses, and unfortunately for Nakamura, Carlsen is one opponent he doesn't fare well against.

Nakamura on the same level as Magnus? Most people think so? Where was this sample of "most people" taken, in the nut house? Carlsen was not lucky to win this game...he played like stockfish. Magnus will be the first to reach 2900, while Nakamura is 2772...hoping to reach 2800. While Nakamura would like to believe that he is the only one to stop Carlsen (I believe he actually said this)...he does not have the guns to support this. In reality, he makes too many mistakes, and takes too many chances in his current play....while Carlsen plays like a machine.

MrDamonSmith

Like a machine!! Well a machine that gets tired sometimes & certainly does make mistakes. He is human after all. Now Carlsen is +10 -0 =15 vs Nakamura, that's 70%. That's not close so no, they're nowhere near each other in playing ability. A 70% to 30% gap takes away any "luck" debate. Nakamura ends up shaking his head in just about every game vs Magnus now, that says it all.

naka's neighbours

MrDamonSmith

superkings neighours

Edit: actually only superking himself, he just made up the "most people" part to try to add some credibility to a completely nonsensical comment.

Like Magnus said in a post-game interview a year or two ago, "Nakamura does not understand chess on the same level that I do."

There is no need to soil Uranus's name in all this.

Did Magnus really say that!? Cool. It's quite true, I don't think a player thats about 600-700 level would understand either. It's a very interesting phenomenon that people at the lower/weaker levels of any sport, game, job, any endeavor, etc. think success in that area is attributable to luck more than anything else. That explains their own level & lack of understanding. Are you reading this superking?

Yes, he really said that. However I doubt that I remembered the exact quote. But the "does not understand chess on the same level that I do" is VERY close to what he said.

Here's another reverence to the quote on Chessbomb -

http://chessbomb.com/archive/2012-biel/06-Hikaru_Nakamura-Magnus_Carlsen/

"kamalakanta: Carlsen has said that Nakamura does not have as deep an understanding of the game as he does."

Seventh line of chat.

Aren't you seeing a pattern yet?

MrDamonSmith,

Here is probably where I read the quote -

Carlsen told VG he believes the pressure on Nakamura will be greater. He doubts that Kasparov's insights in Magnus' own game will make the American a tougher opponent in the future.

"I, too, know Kasparov well, and the way he thinks. Besides, I have a pretty good idea of what he thinks are my strengths and weaknesses. I've had very good resaults against Nakamura in the period since Kasparov has been his trainer. I think Nakamura has made and will make more progress as a result, but right now there are four to five players in the world, including me, who have significantly better understanding of chess than Nakamura. And I don't know if even a man like Kasparov can change that in the short term."
