A mechanical chess player known as The Turk defeated almost all opponents from 1770 to 1854 and baffled the best minds of Europe including Napoleon Bonaparte (not to mention Benjamin Franklin). Remarkably it was only “exposed” in the 1820s... some trick.

I heard about it. Napoleon played against it, and to see if it had pre-programmed moves, he played an illegal move.  The Turk, in a fit of rage, knocked all the pieces off the board, scaring the shit out of everyone watching the game. Laughing

Yes.  I just saw something on famous magic tricks, and this was between biting the bullet and making the statue of liberty disappear.  They went quite in depth on the Turk, which is how I know about Napoleon's attempt at an illegal move.
