Did tactics trainer become easier?

I've found it difficult to consistently remain over ~1300 in the Chess.com tactics trainer. Over the past 6 months, my rating has had several climbs followed by huge declines (much like the stock-markets). However, it seems that within the last week my score has improved considerably without any sudden changes in my number of attempts or study strategy. Has anyone else noticed this? Perhaps its a change in the programming? I find it difficult to believe that after ~80 hours of use I can make such a sharp and consistent improvement. It is worth noting that I started at a very low rating (somewhere around 500).

Thoughts?

It looks like they may tweaked he selection algorithm again. Most of your tactics were below your rating. The last time the algorithm worked that way for me, it put downward pressure on my rating though meh.png

Maybe I need do a string of them and see what happens.

I've noticed the opposite. I've been sort of steady for a few months, but the last couple weeks I have declined about 200 points. To be honest, I never thought I was 2300 level, and now the 2100 level ones seem harder than before. I believe I'm really about 1900 so maybe that's where it will eventually settle at. Martin is probably right, they probably changed something again. Or it's the weather. If it's sunny out I find that my concentration on chess plummets.

I'm guessing my post was a bit premature and I'll see my typical rating-crash here in a day or two. Just curious if anyone else noticed a change or if...just maybe... I'm starting to recognize the patterns a bit better. Good luck everyone! Keep training!

Don’t make this a big deal.  Don’t worry about the ratings as much - it serves as an indicator how good you are at tactics than your peers, but it doesn’t go in hand to your actual otb USCF rating.  That’s because online ratings are inflated.  You need to keep that in mind when you play chess online or solving puzzles.  It’s what you get out of it.

Also, if you see yourself improving, that can be attributed to several factors.  In addition to the changes in the algorithm, you should also consider the following:

1. Doing the same puzzles as before.  Puzzles repeat over time and maybe you’re getting these more.

2. Chess com will try to give a variety of puzzles - some hard and some easy.  It’s by chance that you are getting the easy ones.  That’s because maybe you are more knowledgeable about those tactical motifs than other types of puzzles.

3. Your current state of mind.  Maybe you are not as stressed and have a much clearer start of mind.  Then you will see things quicker.  This is just as if you’re playing a chess game.  If your frame of mind is not fresh, you will lose a lot more games than you win.  That’s how it goes with other sports as well.

if chess was easy, you would have been a master by now. happy.png  You are enjoying the ride, the moment.  Keep up with it and you will eventually get there.

PS. I saw your comment (#6) just now.  Yes, your post was a bit premature, but it’s okay.  You just didn’t know and now you know.  Chess as well as life is full of ups and downs. You will have bad moments, but you will also have great moments.  It’s the yin and the yang.
