What is the difference between an active piece and an effective piece?
I haven't run across pieces being called "effective" with any regularity at all... this word's use is probably just the result of an individual chess writer deciding it's the best word to describe a piece functioning in a specific chess context.
Active, on the other hand, is a term I've seen used widely in chess literature. It refers to a piece that has some space to move in and has threats to make. An active piece is a piece posted in such a way that it has possibilities and choices associated with it -- I guess in the simplest terms, a piece that can move around and cause trouble is an "active piece."
