Disconnecting in a losing position

What is wrong with players that disconnect in a losing position? They should have to have a time out and not play for 24 hours if I had my way.

Yes, it drives me nuts. Happens multiple times per day. You can report it and they do get reprimanded.

Have you tried to ask these players directly?

If they ban (temporarily or otherwise) too many legitimate, human-players those people will no longer be able to see ads. Thats highly problematic as they need players coming back to see the ads (more eyeballs means they can charge more for ads) and so that they can be converted into paying customers too. So yeah, I don’t see them getting too aggressive about banning people for disconnecting on a losing position

Ego.

If they abandon instead of resigning, they don't have to admit to themselves that they lost.

The problem with imposing a heavy penalty is that some of the people being punished will be completely innocent. There are several ways that a disconnect can happen, and most of those ways are not contingent on which side is winning.

If the electrical power goes off, then the player will be automatically disconnected... and not all countries have electrical grids as reliable as the US power grid.

Should he also be punished? Why?

A suggestion that I made years ago was to run several instances or copies of the chess.com software on the same set of servers. In effect, set up a series of "layers" of virtual servers, all of them running the same software.

Players who do not abandon, or who abandon so rarely that it might just be innocent, play on the main server. They will never have occasion to find out about the "lower layers".

Players who abandon too frequently are sent to "Hell", where they can only get matched against other players who have abandoned too frequently. This way, they get confronted with the same crap that they have been inflicting on other people.

If they stubbornly continue abandoning games (against the other abandoners) they gradually sink deeper and deeper into the layers of Hell. All hope abandon, ye who disconnect!

If they stop their childishness, then after a certain time without abandons (three days? a week?) they are moved back up one level, from deeper Hell to shallower Hell, and eventually liberated on the main server, to join the non-abandoners.

Discuss.

Why do people get so worked up about this?

I *know* I've made a good move as soon as I see my opponent's connection bar start dropping. Just wait it out...

What about the opposite, being in a winning position and low and behold the mysterious lag happens, all of sudden the pieces are made of tungsten and can't be moved, happens way more than it should

It’s poor sportsmanship. Imagine you have to wait for 1 hour until you win on time (Due to a classical time control). Even if you only have to wait for a few minutes, they literally waste your time when they could just quickly hit the resign button.

I think there is already a algorithm that pairs poor sports with poor sports.
