Discrimination & Toxicity in Chess Culture

I'm curious as to people's experiences regarding bigotry they've faced within chess, whether OTB or online, whether direct and indirect, whether because of sex, religion, sexuality, or ethnicity etc.  If you want to share, I'm interested to hear about your experiences.

I've only encountered that sort of toxicity online. Anyone who habitually acted like that in person would probably get taught some manners at some point.

Are you willing to share some examples on online toxicity you've faced from within the chess community?

MiguelUAB

The chess online community is for the most part no different that other online community. Over the board chess is more sophisticated though.

Have you ever experienced toxicity or bigotry within the chess world? If so, could you please share your experience?

I haven’t. I have experienced insults because of the other person losing a game, but not bigotry.

At the same time I think is difficult to be a bigot when you just have an image and a nickname to be bigot against, unless the other player disclose information about the sexual preferences or ethnicity, which is kind of unlikely in a bullet/blitz game (the most frequent kind of games)

True. But I suspect people make assumptions and judgements based on photo avatars and names etc. I suspect online bigotry is more on forums, or else somewhat randomly directed to people based on their profiles or photos. OTB bigotry is likely more specifically targeted.

When I found out a few years ago that the Montessori school my girlfriend's daughter was going to was bringing in a chess coach for an after-school program, I was pretty happy about it. But every time I went to pick her up and got to watch the interactions, all I saw was a guy that spent most of his time on two boys (who sucked, but were aggressive), a brief amount of time observing other boys, and who sent the girls off to a corner to play between themselves with absolutely zero instruction or even a casual walk-by to see how they were doing.

...and people wonder why women still need a boost to their participation.

Why do you spam threads?

toxic_internet

The good souls playing chess are very, very few. Most people playing this game are truly awful human beings. The chess culture is very toxic indeed.

DelightfulLiberty

Because making legitimate critiques or searching for data are good things designed to make the world a better place.

Why do you spam threads?

(Note I'm not insulting you nor commenting upon any POV you have, simply asking a question about a behaviour you engage in)

Myriabillis

Ich habe gehört Magnus Karlsen fickt kleine Kinder.

First, let me tell what is not sacred to me: your life.

What do you think I'm going to do to you when you speak irreverently about things I hold sacred?

I dont know.

What are you going to do me for starting a thread asking people to share their experiences of toxicity within chess culture?

Might it perhaps be violent?

Please tell me what you are going to do to me.

Myriabillis

Magnus Karlsen soll einen Nachbarjungen betascht haben.

Myriabillis

Myriabillis

Magnus Karlsen: verklag' mich doch. Ich bin eh insolvent.

Myriabillis

Ich persönlich spiele, wenn überhaupt, Schach nur auf Spielbrettern und da eher schlechten Räuberschach. Also: insolvent und kein Kunde, aber jemand der viel und gerne redet.

Verklagt mich doch.

Do you understand how problematic this comment is? If you call chess a religion, but don't hold a person's life to be sacred? Seriously, are you okay?

oh wait no I spelled it wrong again. What is a long quach? Apple keeps trying to spell it "quack" lol

I think it is just his name. Quach is a Vietnamese surname
