He's obviously a world class talent. A (former) perennial top 10 player.

But context maters. When we start talking about the best of all time, then the MINIMUM becomes world championship status, or world champion contender.

The truth is Naka doesn't qualify under either.

He was never a world champ. He was never a contender.

I mean, why aren't we talking about Nigel Short? He was on TV. He played Kasparov in a world Championship match. He popularized chess for his country right?

But oh, in the 1990s Twich didn't exist, and conveniently Nakamura has decided to only consider Twitch viewers, so suddenly a non-contender like himself can rank among the best.

Let's admit it, hikaru is no. 16 in the world and almost blitz champion, but he's not close to fabiano carlsen and nakamura ok?

Hahaha, nakamura is hikaru, a moment of silence for those who fell for this

Hey, llama, sorry, would you mid plz unbanning me from this thread? I'm sorry if I was rude, my 17 yr old comp isn't starting, i'm triggered....

This is not quite what I'd call a "low effort post" . . . so I wont block you for it.

Congratulations.

But that is one way to tell the difference between new players and actual players.

We call pros by their last name. To most of us, his name is Nakamura or Naka... and I say this while acknowledging that I've switched back and forth through the course of this topic.

But to n00bs he's known a "hikaru."

Ok, you're unblocked.

But it's not because you were rude, it's because I have basically zero respect for this community... so I have no patience.

I  would rank Hikaru a legend since he is very good at online blitz and bullet. He also has helped introduce chess to many people. I don't think he is a god since he's not really the best at classical. He is very good, a super grandmaster with 2700+ fide rating but I think others could beat him such as Grischuk, Vachier-Lagrave, Fabiano, Wesley

Who has he introduced to chess that xQc has not?

The cross over viewers come from people like xQc, not from Hikaru.

Hikaru intorudced chess players to Leage of Legends, maybe, or esports, but not the other way around.

I'll wait to watch the video before I run into conclusions.

I've found that people are always ready to bash Hikaru for anything he says.

I thought llama left? Lol

If I could have voiced my disgust for Hikaru's video somewhere else I would have.

I found that part of the video rather cringy as well, then again nothing new from a Hikaru video. Anyone who has followed him for a while knows that he never passes an opportunity to praise himself and his abilities.

Talking about a tier list Hikaru does not belong in the same tier as Magnus, Bobby or Kasparov. Close, but not quite there. The fact that for a while he put Karpov below himself is just laughable. However I'm not sure whether your assessment of Hikaru vs. Fabi is accurate one. Fabiano while being arguably stronger at classical chess, doesn't come close to Hikarus prowess in faster time formats or variants, which arguably are more and more chess of the day. I think they both belong in the same tier and in which order is up to whichever type of abilities you prefer.

A classy choice would simply be to not have included his name. He could mention himself, but say something like it's not appropriate for him to rank himself... instead he faked it, and told Levy to rank him.

Levy... the man who admitted on stream he couldn't even name the world champs in order (I can do that) didn't need to think for more than 2 seconds before rattling off a litany of praises for Nakamura culminating in declaring Hikaru a god. It couldn't have been more obvious they planned this before the stream began.

---

As for speed chess vs classical, they aren't comparable.

Who was the world #1 rapid player 5 years ago?

How about blitz?

How about 20 years ago?

No one knows, because no one cares.

We're not talking about Nigel Short because he's a d-bag in general wink.png.  Judit Polgar taking him apart was maybe the most awesome "oops, I guess I am full of something" moment in recent chess history...

Deranged

I totally agree with you llama. To reiterate:

1) Hikaru does not deserve to be called a "legend" of chess, because he's never been a world champion or even close to it.

2) Hikaru is well-known for being a poor sport, throwing a tantrum when he loses.

3) Hikaru is not the most influential chess player. Agadmator, xQc and many others have done far more for the game of chess than Hikaru has, and they weren't even on the list.

4) Levy was incentivised to say nice things about Hikaru, for his own personal gain. He's an IM that's trying to gain popularity in the chess community. It's like an executive saying nice things about the CEO of the company they work for. You can't trust what they have to say.

5) These rankings are always super American-centric. They always rank American players like Fischer above other legends like Karpov, Kasparov, etc.
