It is typical of many words in the English language which have begun as another language and then transferred through other languages and finally become Anglicised. It is commonly thought that 'checkmate' derives from the Persian 'sah mat' (the king is dead), then transferred to French 'eschec mat', and then finally to English 'checkmate'.
