Simple answer--yes.
do Americans really see Bobby as one of the greatest players

I think, B. Fischer was a greatest player for his time, he was alone against Soviet chess player team.

Catergorizing entire nations without dates, quotes, and sources are what these boards are all about. >:[
I’m a white man, you can’t even hurt my feelings. What can you really call a white man that really digs deep? Hey cracker … oh ruined my day. Boy shouldn’t have called me a cracker, bringing me back to owning land and people what a drag.
you can always remind them that asians and indians are taking over their jobs :p

Yeah, You call me a dog
Well, that's fair enough
It doesn't bother me as long as you know
Bad luck will follow you
If you keep me on a leash and you drag me along
Greatest chess quote of all time: "Fischer was not such a bad player indeed.Only Karpov,Botvinnik,Lasker,Petrosian,Kasparov,Smyslov and Tal are better than him. However,Fischer is the favorite player of checker players and beginners." Alexandra Thessa,2015.
To say that Petrosian was better than Fischer, when he had a minus score of 4 - 8 vs him, including a lost candidates final by 2.5 - 6.5 is an idiotic statement in itself. I won't take on the other parts of this statement... The question might certainly arise with Karpov, Kasparov, and maybe Tal, who had a plus score vs him, but he never played him in tournament games when Fischer got stronger.... to say that they were simply better is of course incorrect. It's strange that the poster didn't mention Carlsen, anyway.

Lasker
Kasparov
Steinitz
I think Fischer would disagree with me. He didn't think highly of Lasker or Kasparov.

As an American, I will always see Bobby as the Greatest. I grew up wanting to play like him, dissected all of his games. Even play the Sicilian Najdorf and KID until now.
It is not blind admiration, mind you. 1 e4 isn't my cup of tea. I play it sometimes to mix it up, because as a veteran of 30 yrs I know a thing or two. I often play the Caro-Kann. The QGD Tartakower variation I have made a mainstay in my repertoire. (Although, RJF used it too)

I am a Queen's pawn player. But what Bobby has shown me as I often glean from his games, his pragmatism in his own play. To do what works for him. And only him.
And yet it's not dogmatism. The search for Ideas is always his purpose. And it was my purpose too. For a time, because I am on the tail-end of playing chess.
It's only a hobby.

But I digress. Yes. I think the majority of Americans, chess players or not, will always revere Robert J. Fischer as the Greatest World Champion.

How could not be? The greatest, I think that's s pointless discussion; one of the greatest, I think is clear he is.
