Very easy to believe.  Mr. O'Neal was definitely one of the greatest basketball players of all time.

Many delusional Americans think he was the greatest player ever.  I, speaking as an American, do not!  I think he is one of the most overrated good-for-nothing thugs that played at a time when others were simply weaker.  Every sport and/or game has at least one massively over-rated, over-hyped player, like Dan Marino (Football), Roger Clemmens (Baseball), Kobe Bryant (Basketball), and yes, Bobby Fischer!

Dude, they changed the rules of the game to make it tougher on Shaq'.

Bobby Fischer was like the master of the past, he work on his opening preparation, did not have a team of grandmasters to help him, in the adjournments Fischer did all his analysis, not like the loser Botvinnik who needed Gellar and a team of GMs to save his ass in a complicated endgame against Bobby. Fischer did his homework and research in the opening because of his hard work he became the greatest player. Every player after Fischer had trainers to guide them to the world champion, Karpov, Kasparov and Carlsen.  True genius is a player who can rise to greatness without the help of others and Fischer was the greatest because he had no trainer to guide him to the world champion; he was like Morphy, Steinitz, Lasker,Capablanca and Alekhine; they reach to the top through their genius and no help from trainers.

Fischer played at the Manhattan club and with many masters from an early age and was coached by Lombardy who later also worked as his 2nd.  Larry Evans also worked as Fischer's 2nd.

He was the best at smashing boards. I still remember when Olajuwon first grabbed him and taught him what about this game matters...

Hack-a-Shaq and put him on the Free Throw line - watch him shoot and then try to tell me he was one of the greatest basketball players of all time!

So...Steve Nash is the greatest of all time?

Avatar of Pulpofeira

The greatest is Michael Jordan. He wasn't too bad either on the free throw line.

Avatar of Pulpofeira

(He was even able to slam a free throw...).

Avatar of bigpoison

Yeah, but he played for the Bulls.

I'm a huge fan of the Lakers myself. But facts are facts.

I don't like the Celtics either, but a fella' could make a pretty strong argument for Larry Legend.

Initial five of the Dream Team (IMHO):

Earvin "Magic" Johnson (G)

Michael Jordan (G)

Larry Bird (F)

Karl Malone (F)

Hakeem Olajuwon (C)

you should not look at his rating. if he lifed today his rating would be around 2930.

I like it.  I'd probably swap Malone for Duncan, though.

Not a bad choice!

Wilt Chamberlain changed the game forever.   He would slam dunk free throws, which forced a change in the rules.   Now your feet have to be behind the line or the shot does not count.   He was the first player to score over 100 points in a pro game.   That's totally bonkers.

Avatar of Pulpofeira

What? He wasn't even a match to Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Avatar of bigpoison

Ha!  Slam freethrows!  That's a good one.

Avatar of bigpoison

There's a lot of truth to that.  Though, it kind of refutes your argument above about a bunch of guys who never played together being able to beat any other five.
