Do board visualization exercises have any affect on how far you can calculate accurately OTB?

Yes.

Have you tried them? And I mean like exercises where you visualize the quickest way to get a knight from one place to the other or all visualize all the squares controlled by a knight on c3 and bishop on f2

The thing I do is : Put the board on any position, can be a problem, try to do the moves on your mind ,don't touch anything, see all the variations on your brain and try to visualize the resulting position on the board ,later make the moves and see the real position, came back and do again. Lot of practice until You can see the resulting position without move the pieces. works for me  on OTB games .

And you think you're calculation has improved now?

I work on visualization with my students in almost every lesson. Their ability to calculate, and their ability to judge the resulting positions improve dramatically. Visualization is one of the most important skills in chess.

I didn't know you were a coach! So do you do it like Aletool does or do you do baord visulization where you have to say, for example, how a white queen from d4 can attack a black bishop on b7, without being captured  and without looking at the board.

Can you share what visualization drills you do with your students? I want to help my son.

One thing I`v got some gain from is visualizing a N on a empty board when I`m lying in bed at night. Its been quite effective for me and I dont need coordinates anymore!Evry time I move point out(to myself)the coordinates and the color of each move.

+its time efficient

+it helps me sleep

I have started doing something similar. Playing through an opening until I fall asleep. And not just remembering the algebraic notation, but really trying to see the board and asking questions like "what color square did that piece move to?" and "what lines did that open?". Too early to say how much this is helping, but yes, it helps me sleep
