I am a 1200rated player, and I am 14. I love Chess, and I am deep in studying theory. I am @ 1600 rated on the lessons, and I would love advice, Opening patterns, and principles/ theory. Please help me make it past the 1200 player. I will post my games on this forum for Constructive Criticism, please review them, and tell me how I can improve!

I am almost a 1200 rated player, I'm 12. I've been studying theory for a year and I'm continuing to do that. I recommend Queens Gambit and Caro-Kann Defense. I know I'm not any better than you but I'd like to help you and you help me in return. My rating increased from 850 (January) to 1100 (Now) when I began Queens Gambit.

Let me give you an answer you dont want to hear.

1. Forget about GM.  Youre a 1200 player.  Work on improving 1 section at a time for now.

2. Forget about "Openings"..."Opening Theory" It seems like every beginner that comes here all want to learn openings.  I know it sounds impressive to say you know <insert opening here> 10...20...or more moves deep.  It does you no good to know an opening 20 moves deep if youre haging pieces, and missing simple tactics.

3. At your level stick with Opening Principles.  Thats all you need for now.

4. Tactics...tactics...tactics...

5. Double check your moves to make sure you arent hanging anything.

6. Look for Forcing Moves first.  Why? Because they are the easiest lines to calculate.

7. Tactics...tactics...tactics...

8. Review and analyze your games.  Post them for peer review.  Be mature enough to be able to listen to advice you arent goig to like.

9. Play people 200 hundred points above you.

10. Tactics...tactics...tactics...

11. Ask yourself "why" your opponent made the move they did.

12. Work hard, but have fun!

13. Be happy with your success, even if your ultimate goal isnt acheived.

14. Play longer time controls, at least G/30 or longer.

15. Avoid bullet and blitz.  They instill bad habits when youre trying to improve.

Good Luck on your journey!

I'd say that depends on whether predestination is correct. If so, then there's only one possible future, and it probably doesn't involve you being a grandmaster. However, if predestination is not true, then you do, in fact, have the potential to become a grandmaster - just like the sun has the potential to blink out tomorrow, and George R.R. Martin has the potential to finish ASOIAF before the 22nd century.

Seriously though, just study hard, and try to make the most of your potential. For some (like me), that isn't much. However, some rare folk can become GMs. Only time will tell.

Just don't get your hopes up.

If your playing Black play the Sicilian Defense (my secret)

and if Your White play the Queen's Gambit i would recommend them two openings to learn

But yes study tactics too

Avatar of ShahxaibKhan

spent the next three months playing tactics at chesstempo.com say 80% time to chesstempo than you can test your skill here by playing blitz of alteast 10min, after that you will see the results, forget about the books, openings, theories whatsoever,

If you're not at least 2200 at 14 then your chances at becoming a GM are pretty much zero. Kids between 7-13ish have more synpases in their brains than adults, and it's extremely important to establish an in depth knowledge of chess during this time if you want to eventually become a high rated player.

Yeah, I'm in MENSA too, but unless you are in your teens or early twenties, your concentration and quick reflects are too slow no matter how smart you are...

Good luck to you, though.

Read Chess: 5334 Problems, Positions, and Games by Polgar over and over.   It is one of the few books you need for mastery.

When I used to counsel students at a community college, I would get kids straight out of high school who would proclaim, "I want to get a Ph.D."  To which I would reply, "Fine. Start with an associates degree, then a Bachlors, the a Masters or combined Masters/Doctoral program and you will get one!"

...as you climb to the top, the rungs are farther apart...condiser playing Texas Hold'em...there is more money in it.

Let me quote Vishy Anand :

"Nowadays, if you are not a GM by age 14, you can forget about it"
