Do new members get more points?

Today in Live Chess I played against so. who jumped from 1294 to 1357 just by winning against me (1284), standard chess 15|10. When I win against similarly rated players, I get only about 8 points.

I saw that he only just started in January this year, while I signed up like three years ago but only really started playing half a year ago. Is this the reason, do new members get more points? If it is, wouldn't it make more sense if the number of games played was taken into account rather than the number of days that have passed since registration?

If you look at your own history, you'll see that you went from 1085 to 1157 just by winning your first game(against a player rated in the 900s). So yes, when you start you get more points, but it soon changes as you play more games:)

                To answer your question, No. It doesn't favor new members. To get a large number of points, beat a higher rated player. I'm in that cycle of similarly rated players.

This is a pretty common question.  The short answer is yes, but they also lose more points.  Chess.com use the Glicko rating system which tries to very quickly establish the correct rating for new players.  As a result, their rating jumps upp and down like they're on a trampoline.  After maybe 100 games, the rating swings are more like someone asleep in a hammock.  If you want to read more try doing a search forums (that little rectangle in the upper right) for Glicko RD (RD is ratings deviation).
