Do openings matter?

Or can you get better at chess just by working on your tactics and endgames? Ben Finegold seems to think so and Hikaru is able to dominate by playing random opening moves (a3, b3, c3).

When you are a child they teach you to walk slowly following your parents!! As you grow up you can run you can jump without falling!!

If you don’t want to study openings just pick king’s indian setup and safely transition into the middlegame

I went up to class A (over 1800 uscf) with no opening repertoire. Just basic opening principles which really are the foundation of positional strategy anyway. U know, control the center, get ur pieces active fast, hinder ur oponents development, etc. Not much memorization.

Yes, but only to some extent. Don't overdo it.

openings are important for achieving viable middlegame positions. placing pieces on usable squares or controlling key squares. the other purpose of openings is to select a pawn structure that you like to play. but it is only one aspect of the game. others include proper piece exchanges, tactics, piece maneuvering and endgames etc. a majority of the time a loss comes from these areas and the opening is blamed for it.

I've never learnt openings. I've never read a chess book but have played enough games to work out what works. My games get bad reviews but they work so i dont mind what the computer says. Just do what makes you enjoy the game. Here is an example. The computer said i play like a 1500 with 42% accuracy hehehe but so what. I won. https://www.chess.com/game/live/90439290355

The real answer is. Chess openings matter if you want to get high rated. Otherwise just back up your pieces and wait for a blunder loool
