Why take a board game seriously?

It's fun to work hard and see yourself improve. That's not just for chess but anything.

It is fun to feel superior because your rating is higher.

Is that really how you feel about chess? But your rating isn't very high, hmm.

I feel that this comment is unnecessarily impolite. i do take chess seriously, and i enjoy things of a logical nature (have done a lot of math stuff) and just want to have a deeper grasp of the depth and complexity of the game, which I find to be rich and engaging (yes, even at my low level, I feel this). I know several people who have done otb tournaments and have done chess as a significant extracurricular, 2000+ fide or whatever, and put that on their college applications. These people are all VERY accomplished in other things as well. Furthermore, I find it difficult to take it seriously when someone makes a shot at others for being lonely and having no respectable source of self-worth, when they are showing how stable their self-image is by putting others down.

People like board games and want to win. At the end of the day it’s a board game and nobody makes it there life unless money is involved.

My rating puts me in the top 20 percent of all players. Maybe not good enough for self righteous egotists who might claim my rating is not very high.

Good luck with the game ant to win when you are always matched with someone of similar ability.

Think about that for a bit. See if it sinks in.

You would be categorised into the intermediate segment. The way you described to made you sound egotistical aswell.

If you are born into a rich family or just strike it rich you may have the material advantages that allow you to do chess and achieve other things. If you do come from rich society, you would also be concerned with impolite.

Even better, your rapid rating puts you almost in the top 10%.

But you know how online ratings are...

When did I ever mention another person's rating?

Ok, looking at the pattern of your comments, it's probably not worth responding more.
But I'll make one last comment I guess, which is that I'm glad you have meaningful and important things to do that include telling people that what they spend time on is worthless.

You basically said that 80% of players are worse than you. With a rating of 1100 is intermediate

Yeah, deadman likes insulting people a lot, then talks about how he's in the top __% of chess players. Ok man. Good for you.

But like I said, I like chess because it's fun that there are always a few seemingly simple mistakes I can fix in my game... so I try to remember them for next time and I do a little bit better. That's what makes chess a lot of fun.

When I decided to put a lot of time into chess I was hoping this would always be true, and it turns out I was right. There are always little things a person can do to play better.

Yeah I had someone mention something similar to me, that it's nice to feel you can make incremental progress in chess. For me I enjoy the fact that over time I gain a greater sense of the board and how things are working together. Knowing I have a ton to learn, I've already realized that there's so much more in a given position than I realized say, six or nine months ago. And there are so many aesthetically pleasing tactics/attacks!

Avatar of ice_cream_cake

An example of an aesthetically pleasing attack. This is a game my friend played as white. I just love how beautifully messy the position is at the end lol.

I like the old mantra: if you're going to do something - try to do it well.

This can apply to anything you do - cooking, relationships, hobbies ...

Of course, not everyone approaches things the same way. And that's okay, too.

lol, yeah, nice pattern.

Anything that can make you smile for being beautiful is worth it grin.png

The players below 2000 do not play chess seriously unless they have under 50 games.

Avatar of ice_cream_cake

Hmm, I feel that is not quite logical. I don't think it's really possible to reach 2000 without a degree of seriousness, so it doesn't make sense to say a 2000+ player wasn't serious before they hit 2000 (which takes some time...)

In general, consistent performance over an extended period of time would suggest otherwise, lol.
