Do Players intentionally Auto Resign?

I'm new to chess and not very good, but I can at least spot and counter the 4-move mate. I've noticed in several of my matches that my opponent auto-resigns after I foil what is apparently their only strategy. Do Players intentionally auto-resign? You can do so by closing your browser window or logging out, so it's not always because of a slow connection. If players are doing this then chess.com should do something to discourage it, as countering a 4-move mate doesn't help me improve my game against real players, so the wins are essentially meaningless.

It is their only strategy a lot of the time. Being new to chess most people hear of this mate and they go on doing just what you described. This has a silver lining to it though, due to the fact you are gaining points you get stronger players and they will not do this.

That's a good point, thank you!

I believe if you auto resign too often they actually take the option away. People auto resign because they don’t wanna play black, don’t wanna play a particular opening or don’t want to play players of whatever rating. It’s rude and Chess.com does the best they can to prevent it.

@AlkinKing, that makes sense, unfortunately :)

What is autoresign?

You automatically resign the game if you click the white flag unless the confirm resign button is on.

Many people who auto resign do it when they're in a losing position. It's basically unsportsmanship behaviour - they're losing and don't have the gall to resign. You're able to report folks who do this, chess.com has a default option for reporting players who stall or abandon games. It happens so frequently these days though which is annoying
