Do players outside the United States think Bobby Fischer wasn't actually that good?

i am missing that point also :(

Reading this thread, Tiger Woods comes to mind.  I think there are some similarities there.  Each are brilliant at their best, but flawed in serious ways that seriously hampered their career.  They each completely dominated their competition at certain points.  Neither holds the record for most championships won though.

In about 40 years, ask people around the world if they think Tiger Woods is overrated.  Some will say yes.  He can't compete with Nicklaus's overall record, for example.  However most of those people did not live through the era to witness it personally.

I'm old enough to have lived through both, and neither are overrated IMO.  However if you average their results over the long haul, they can look to be much less on paper.

I really don't think that was his point. He said that anyone who refers to Bobby Fischer as "Bobby" has obvious emotional issues. I don't think he was making some academic statement about Bobby's preferences when he said that.

That's an interesting analogy. I like it. Both players definitely have experienced a fall from grace on a social level, though only Tiger experienced such a fall in terms of play. (To be fair, Fischer quit playing, so we have no idea what he would've looked like if he had kept going for another decade.)

You actually missed a point.Fishcer actually liked calling him as bobby only by his friends as he expressed.

Do you have a source for that?

Do your work on Fischer for source.

mcris

I am around from a long time and did not hear such from him, so if you refuse to give the source, what you said is false.

I think you will win the debate, that argument is simply impossible to counter.

I think the whole ora about Fisher is because he beat russians single handedly. It was a perfect timing during cold war and something that was perhaps noted worldwide. I think chess historians would have different opinions. He was one of greats but not the greatest.

there is no debate.it's like asking for who taught you 2+2 at which age.your sarcastic comment was unnecessary.
mcris

Really? Giving an unknown cite of Fischer's is like 2+2? Just give the source and I'll get it. And please no more swearing if you can oblige... Foot in Mouth

I don't know about my comment, but that invalid comparison was certainly unnecessary.

get some books on fischer rather trolling the 'general topic' forums.let sane ppl discuss on Fischer.grin.png

mcris

Really? Why not name the book in which your claim appears? Maybe because as I said, it is false?

yes its probably rude to assume familiarity by calling robert fischer , bobby , but that is the name i call him why ?

because underneath that anti semite lonely man was a player i do like , and bobby is my homage to take him from that lonely pedastal and welcome him as a much loved player amongst the ranks of all those who love chess

so if i call him bobby its not to dishonour him but to embrace his gift he gave so many , a love of chess

is it a dishonour to my fave player that i call him mischa ? no ,, yet again its about saying how Tal gave so much love of chess to those who are chess players , mischa is my way of saying , you need no pedastal and you have given me a great love of the game

calling someone by their first name is not considered disrespectful in every country and society on earth .from  where i come from ,  we call people by their first name whether we know them personally or not .remember this is internet , people from all around the world come here and talk according to rules of their society ,so kindly do not impose your rules on others .. lets discuss some chess matches of Bobby Fischer , lets share some tips learned from games of Bobby . why waste time in arguing over a trivial matter of calling by first name or not ? thank you .

Is it rude to refer to Fisher as 'Bobby'? I don't think so. If you look at the Bobby Fisher wiki, you will find that many times the writers refer to him as Bobby. Here's a typical paragraph:

"In 1957, Fischer played a two-game match against former World Champion Max Euwe at New York, losing ½–1½.[102][103][104] On the USCF's eleventh national rating list, published on May 5, 1957, Fischer was rated 2231—over 500 points higher than his rating a year before.[105] This made him the country's youngest ever chess master, up to that point.[106] In July, Bobby successfully defended his U.S. Junior title, scoring 8½/9 at San Francisco.[107] As a result of his strong tournament results, Fischer's rating went up to 2298, "making him among the top ten active players in the country".[108] In August, Fischer scored 10/12 at the U.S. Open Chess Championship in Cleveland, winning on tie-breaking points over Arthur Bisguier.[109][110] This made Bobby the youngest ever U.S. Open Champion.[111][112] Bobby won the New Jersey Open Championship, scoring 6½/7.[113] He then defeated the young Filipino master Rodolfo Tan Cardoso 6–2 in a New York match sponsored by Pepsi-Cola."

4 Fishers and 3 Bobbys. Here in the US, use of the name Bobby is quite common and a mark of endearment. IMHO

Actually I dont see Fisher except when you write it , I do see Fischer . Why cant you spell his name correctly ?  Is it so difficult ?

Did Fischer ever complain about anyone referring to him as " Bobby " ?  If he ever did I am unaware of it and if it didnt bother him it certainly shouldnt bother anyone else . It is common practice in the US to refer to someone named Robert as  Bob or Bobby .
