Do Poeple Still play 10|0 or Should I Switch?

Haven't played for 6 months, and always played blitz at 10 minute time controls.  I now see that they moved that time to Rapid.  Considering there is a long range of time controls for "Rapid," what do most people play and what's recommended in the rapid range (i've tried to play 5|0 in the past but I find its too fast for my brain to play an interesting game, so Blitz is likely out).  Should I just go for 30|0 and play longer games?  Or do a lot of people still play at 10|0?

I know the answer is "play what you want" but I always felt like 10|0 was a sweet spot.  But if I'm GOING to play Rapid, maybe longer time controls would be better for me to get in the habit of calculating more.  I know this is probably an old topic that was hashed out when the change was made.  Thanks for answering!

It depends.

If you want to improve play slower.

Rapid and Blitz are the most popular.   When you check your Statistics you will see that Blitz has well over 2 million 2 hundred thousand active players  and  Rapid has over 1 million 7 hundred thousand players !    As you are coming back to chess, why not try to set up 10/0 games.    That is what you are most used to, and should be able to adjust to again.    Careful of the Rating Range you set up -- that you want to play people no lower then X  and no higher then Z.........Good luck in your adventures.   Keep playing !

Both before and after the update, 10|0 has been a very popular time control.  In fact, one of the catalysts for switching 10|0 from blitz to rapid was partially due to its popularity.  Hopefully, ChessDotCom will create a new "Classical" category so players feel more comfortable switching between the current Rapid options.

I switched from 10|0 to 30|0 and 5|0. I play a lot of 5 now but like 30 much more.

I've read this a lot.  Is 30 mins long enough in your opinion to be meaningful or are we talking longer?  Ideally I play for about an hour a night because if I try to play more I don't have time to  do tactics or look at my games which I try to also progress in.  So its really a question if I'm better off playing one long game or 3 short ones.  Thanks for your opinion

1 long game or 3 short ones ?   as long as you  try in whatever time limits you chose  AND  go over your games with the analysis, you will be improving and sharpening your focus on future games.

10/0 as of the last announcement is the most popular game.
It stands for a much needed improvement however.

The 55 second auto-abort at the start is Far too long.

I know how it is derived at - the formula to determine it’s length based on the max length of Rapid games-

however - an exclusion needs making for this short time control. Much closer to the 15 seconds we see in blitz would be more appropriate.

I'm pretty certain that 10|0 is the most commonly sought-after time control. Well, at least that was when 10|0 was blitz.

I'm not certain whether the 10|0 time control, which is currently counted as rapid, remains in first place.

Danny said as much after the monthly update. Anywho - it’s a preferred preference for many players.

A nice compromise between fast and slow games. We would all play better given more time. Todays world of chess seems to take more enjoyment from quantity than quality. Problems arise in longer games - too many poor sports to begin with. Start a longer game with random players and risk them stalling or timing out - just for the sake of rating points.

I used to only play 10|0 time controls.  After it switched from Blitz to Rapid, I've been playing 5|0 and 10|0 for the challenge of seeing how well I can keep my ratings up in both categories.  I prefer 10 minutes and I feel like I am a better player in that time control.

Likewise !

Hmm thats a good point.  I imagine people trying to play on phones is a factor there to, just playing a longer game makes it more likely you to have connection issues, much less other shenanigans.

I usually use only about half my time, but I still like 10|0 best. I find worrying about a clock too stressful and flagging just makes my hiney twitch. I’m not super competitive and 10|0 is a nice relaxed game.

bb - What is the point of the name calling- insulting new players except to point out who the real “noob”is? Your trolling is sub-standard, par for the course. Some members feel it necessary to draw negative attention to themselves at any opportunity- contributing nothing to the topic.

"Noob" is short for "newbie", another slang term that comes from the word "new". A noob usually means a bad player in a game, or someone who does not know the rules of a community. Being a noob is usually not a good thing. ... Also, in some areas the word noob can mean someone is obsessed with things.

I actually play ten minute games every day so far.

10I0 has declined in popularity after it was changed to rapid time control.

Too categorize new players as being “noobs” is generally regarded as being an insult. No two ways about it.

Etymology is irrelevant, it’s usage that important. Though noob derives from newbie, noob is pejorative while newbie just means new player. In online play a noob is an incompetent fool regardless of level of experience. You could use newbie if you just want to refer to the inexperienced and not sound like you’re judging.

Exactly.
