if i've learned anything from my minor in cultural studies, there is no such thing as common sense.

i'd agree depending on their formal education. as i stated, it's pretty obvious to most students who understood general cultural studies theory that there is no such thing as common sense. so it seems to follow that those with a formal education would not have said common sense.

CMGuess

I should mention that chess isn't sense to the common people thus making it not common sense since it's not something common amongst the people.

Do, I need to go off about the definition of "common", and "sense"? You're taking the phrases way out of context, and I must tell you to come down, because it's getting very annoying!

Oh, and it's common sense to spell correctly!!

Chess isn't common sense for weak players and I consider myself weak even with a peak rating of 2237! Why? Even the strongest players have trouble evaluating positions and this is a larger problem amongst lets say untitled players who have difficulty evaluating positions that have equal material but can't figure out whose better or even what to do.

NICE!

People are strange, common sense is basically nothing more than good sense/sound judgement in practical things......

Nice!  I would also add, with chess, as n life, we makes things harder than they actually r.  Outside any 'formal' education.

Money mouth... & actually have some people who say this (COMMON SENSE) doesn't exist; furthermore, is not useful n chess.  Yell

oh, it exists obviously. it's just completely arbitrary and pointless.

i'm pretty sure people are referring to logic and not common sense in a lot of these posts. there is a very big difference between the two. common sense does not necessarily entail logic (it can, but not necessarily so), and logic is obviously not always in the realm of common sense for many people.

1) Learn to type correctly, the only image i have of you actually with all these abreviations and sms is a teenage that wants to type as fast as possible.

2)Rating means nothing to an extent.

As retarded as it sounds, doing stupids and innocent things from real life like typing correctly will help you with your tought process. Or maybe it the opposite, learning to play chess correctly helps you doing things correctly in real life.

anyway : Of course chess asks ''common sense'', but common sense is a pretty 'wide' word that can be used for any subjects or themes. Punk's common sense tells them to listen to punk music.

I think chess is about learning how to do things correctly and accuratly according to a PLAN(just like in real life, if you have no plans and do everything like a retard, you won't succeed) - using your past experiences and what you've learn from them to prevent bad moves or ideas you did in the past. It's about being as precise as you'd need to be to ajust a violin sonata to a full orchestra. It asks good intuition to spot good moves and sacs and a lot of imagination to make them work all.

The most important element of chess is Strategy, and the endgame is where your strategy should be exploited. Tactics are only a weapon, a tool of yours to accomplish your strategy.

You can't play correctly without a complete system of yours to fall back on.

and elaborating a successfull system is a tasks that asks years of study, intuition is definitly not enough to sucess in chess.

According 2 your 'tought process' Undecided, u're the person arguing the difference between an' accident & mistake'!  U r saying, elaborating on (agreeing somewhat), with my post.  Why the defensive position?

Do you know how offensive your references to "retard" are to the members of chess.com?

White to play and draw. Use your common sense!

i am french and not english native at all. But i promise i do as much effort as possible to get my post to be comfortable to read.

I was just giving my 2 cents concerning what i think common sense is and why it's not sound to say that it's all what's required to play chess correctly. i don't see why i would be on defensive.

Knightvanguard

Common sense in chess to me is: one does not play a player with a rating 1000 points higher and move the queen out too early.  Now it is common knowledge that early queen moves are not wise for the most part, so that would would be common sense to acknowledge that common knowledge.

MatthewLessard

Yea - it is common sense to aknowledge that common knowledge for a common chess player.

but it is not common sense to the new player that will do it.

The new player's common sense tells him '' if you get your queen out early you will get a good attack''

Yes, I did that when I was just a beginner, but I quickly learned that power was not everything. Then when I was tempted to attack too early with the queen, common sense overruled that thought.
