Do we really need to ritualize chess?
Every culture needs rituals. And so does every subculture.
And chess does. They are merely the rules of the game itself.
It's a culture of the game of chess, not manners or superfluous pleasantries.
chess has always been about a lot of psychology.
in fischer vs spassky, fischer had demolished spassky mentally before a single move had been made due to his demands etc..

Yeah, I played some guy at a pizza joint who was hanging out w/people playing a game, carrying his own warped roled up board. Anyway, I played him a game and he acted really psychotic in weird ways, and I think it was just to set me on edge. His board was a bit of a mess too. And it did throw me because I had no idea how far he would go with his weird behavior. Later I saw him chatting with the other chess players and I didn't see that psychotic behavior, so I wonder if it was a psychological tactic to intimidate. Sure went too far though. I mean what is the point of intimidating people into thinking you might get violent or something? I mean what's all that 'psychology' about. If they want to win with all that ancilliary BS they might as well just threaten physical violence if their opponent doesn't let them win. Anyway, I'll stay miles away from him. I'd tell him he was a jerk or something, and that's not the point of the game, and inappropriate, but just in case he really has a screw loose, I won't chance it.

I respectfully disagree. The culture around any human activity like chess involves all the "unwritten rules". Not saying the unwritten rules make sense, just that they are there.
As far as games on this web site, it has/will develop a set of expected norms (aka culture) of its own, as well as subdivisions of folks who think in different ways. That should be expected.
I understand the logic and the sentiment, and it's OK. I guess that's why I don't like groups, clubs and organizations. Not organic enough.

in a real life tournament i once heard stories of a guy who would use these psychological tactics.
it appears that once when he was losing in a complex tactical situation, he sat and looked at the board FURIOUSLY. then he picked up and SLAMMED it to its new square. the opponent got so disturbed he lost the game. after the game this guy quited down and told him that the move in which he slammed the piece was losing a piece!
I can't get my head about all these expectations of chat surrounding a game like blitz. I think it is what it is and all that other stuff is like religion or something. I don't think people should be rude, but that's about it.
Some people seem so into it that, I'm just waiting for someone to tell me the polite thing to do is to attend the funeral of their captured pieces, and spend two minutes in mourning between moves.
