I can't think of a single GM in the last 25 years who didn't have any coaching whatsoever.
While it may be possible to make GM without a coach, it is extremely unlikely to happen. Does anyone know of a player who made GM without any coaching whatsoever?
After another OTB cheating (the Ivanov case, in which he beat 4 GMs, discussed in other threads, comes to mind), I believe the question should become: do we still need books, coaches, and all the other stuff, when a tablet/phone, internet connection, live feed, and likely a small earpiece make everyone become strong as a GM?
After all there is no real punishment from FIDE, there are no real controls, and most players here live in denial. Chess as a sport is losing credibility, who knows if at top level they are not practicing some form of cheating, and FIDE covers it up.
So why some parents should pay coaches to teach kids chess, and spend all those hours, when just some hardware and software can do the same?
