Do women on average play agressive chess?

Sort:

It was not other than Garry Kasparov, who considered recless aggression to be the trademark of a typical woman's chess style,if such thing should exist. When Carlsen was asked about how women-the neutralisers of everyday life-cope with the competitive nature of professional chess,he answered back that he knows many women who do play aggressively! And of course we have Tomashevsky, who after all claimed that feminine irrationality makes chess more interesting! On the other hand, not a few players find chess battles between women as rather timid...Where is the truth then?

From a psyche standpoint: Wombmen may play aggressive, by feeling they have something 2 prove, against males; seeing how, some wombmen don't feel like 'chess is a man's game'; & of course, there r wombmen who r smarter than men.  Also, it depends on how a man may respond 2 a wombmen's aggressiveness (the man may or may not feel threatened), n which that agression is nothing more than 'fighting back'; win or lose.  I would also like 2 point out that: Wombmen do not like soft, passiveness from men; n chess & life; so of course, n competition (chess), wombmen no doubt go hard!; & I love it!

I'm guessing you're a single male.

Not hardly! Yell  This is just a perspective, n relation 2 the post!  Besides, I would like very much 2 hear what other wombmen, besides U (fezzik) would have 2 say about this!

As a rule, definitely, women play more aggressively than men do.

Jennifer Shahade discusses this phenomenon in her excellent book, Chess Bitch.

What I would like 2 know is, what Rule, Undecided is there that states wombmen play more aggressive than men? Show me this rule!  I mean what do u (fezzik) have a 'Wombman's Aggressiveness Tester', that proves wombmen play more aggressive chess than men?; or did u get that from Jennifer's book as well. Undecided

I've never played against a women before and that is not because I don't want to, it's just that I have an instinctive fear of divorce lawyers.

Deranged

Women more agressive than men?

I can't argue with this because I've never actually watched any chess games with at least one female in it, but it really does surprise me.

I always thought that females would play those "sensible" and "positional" openings like d4, whereas men would be calculating machines that play huge risks, sacrifices and win by calculating further than their opponents.

My mother taught me how to play chess in the late 60's.  She was from an eastern european country and had been groomed as a chess player when in grade school because she had shown great promise.   She wasn't really interested in organized chess and basically stopped playing at about the age of 10 and didn't really play again until she was in her mid 30's.  When she started playing again she was EXTREMEMLY aggressive and very little sense of danger.  I also knew 2 other women chess players, both in the top 30 in the USCF at the time (my mom was a bit lower than that).  They were all extrememly aggressive but were also all considered very strong for their gender.

If you we're going to make gendered generalities I don't think it makes a lot of sense to look at world class players because in reality their strength precludes abject recklessness.  I think you have to look at weaker, class A, B, C players to see what the real tendencies are...

I think we have to look at your mom to see what the real tendencies are.

Well, I have some game scores if you're being serious.  Unfortunately she passed away several years ago, so that's all I have left at this point.

Here_Is_Plenty

I have played a couple of women in Glasgow League chess, years ago; I do not think they were particularly aggressive but one was 1400 and the other 1600.  Maybe not pro enough to be carniverous.

Of course, having said that, my wife plays and hunted my king across the board before mating me in a cafe in Amsterdam on our honeymoon.  I will not call her aggressive as I want to wake up with all my body parts attached.

TheOldReb

I have played chess with some very aggressive female players. A few of them were also aggressive on the chess board. Wink

As 4: "them wombmen go straight for the king ya know."; if I understand u correctly, that is similar 2 me saying "Wombmen do not like soft, passiveness from men", n my original post.  " Ima hafta go with Fezzik on dis un" ?; Undecided go with fezzik on what?

Nice.  Explain that 2 fezzik, since he knows the rules, about a wombman's aggressive play.

Now that Makes Sense?

Of course it makes sense; check it: 'Couldn't have said it better myself', is me being n agreement with LordNazgul; (even after I've already said it)!, is me pointing out, that I already made a similar statement (my response 2 fezzik): 'I would like very much 2 hear what other wombmen, besides U (fezzik) would have 2 say about this!'; got it.
