You mean if your opponent doesn't show up?

You shouldn't gain rating. You should get a forfeit-win for pairing purposes, but that's all.

oh

I don't know if they do it like that, but that's what "should" happen wink.png

oh ok i see. I think that you should gain rating since it is like your opponent ran out of time.

Plus, the tournament was round robin and I don't have a chance of getting a prize. That extra point is pretty much useless. I think I should at least get some amount of rating since I didn't get compensated at all for my opponent forfeiting.

We all want free rating points, but that's now how it works tongue.png

In order to be rated, a game has to consist of at least one move by each player. So no, forfeits are not rated.

You gain rating by winning games, if no game is played you gain no rating. If they didn’t show up then they didn’t run out of time the game never began. They are just penalized for not playing the agreed match, and you’re given the best outcome as you weren’t given a chance to get it by your opponents refusal to play for tournament purposes.

To be clear, there's no rating penalty for not showing up to a game.

The rating system predicts future results based on past results. If there is no game it doesn't make sense to update the rating.

Yes, ratings are based on performance of games played, there’s obviously no rating penalty for not playing a game. There is a penalty via your tournament score/standing. Apologies that seemed unclear. It’s been a long day for me.

It wouldn't be free rating points, as the person who forfeited would lose them.

That's one way to use the word "free" but it's not the common way...
