Is there any way to determine one's style or preferred way of playing without having to shell out lots of money for lessons?

How does one determine to learn, say, the QGD, the KID, or the Grunfeld?

I've been playing over the games of Petrosian; and occasionally the author makes the point that a Capablanca would probably play thusly, whereas a Petrosian would choose another move.

And Fischer played the KID very differently from Kasparov.

How does one find, as objectively as possible, one's chess style?

Does it consist of a feeling of empathy for a player whose games one is playing over? Or an unarticulated sense that one opening is beyond one's capabilities?

I think you should look annotated games about those openings and you will feel which you like the most, which is your favourite and then you can start to learn it.

When you look many games from a master then you start to find similar ways how he deals with typical positions. You should deeply understand and know the games of a player to know his style.

At my level do whats the best option: 1. Study tactics 2. Study Endgames 3. Study Openings 4. Kick all out and hire a coach to take care of everything

I think the best is to have a balance and study tactics, endgames and openings too. A good way to create a study plan is to hire a coach to help in it.

How one should analyse games from book,i mean how much time should be spenton one game??particular things which amatuers neglect regarding this?

I suggest to use at least 30 minutes to analyse a game. I think amateurs like to go over quickly on games and not finishing a book, but buy a new one and study a few pages and get a new one and it goes on. I suggest you to choose a book and go over until the end and review it again.

I'm afraid about what happened to my brain's Chess engine! 3-4 days ago I was at 1665 and now I'm 1551 rated in standard Chess. I suddenly started loosing games. 5-6 days ago, I was playing very confidently against 1650-1720 rated opponent and was holding a nice position and now I'm so frequently loosing from ~1400/~1500/~1550 rated. what happens in my games is, my opponent is trying simple tactics and I'm defending and defending and loosing pieces one by one. Any ideas on what should I do?

I suggest you to stop playing for a few days and review your openings, plans and endgame knowledge. It will help you to get back your confidence. I suggest you to solve also tactics daily at least 30 minutes. When you are ready with the review start to play again and you will start to win back your points and play well again.

Hi, as black against 1.e4 I like to play 1...e5 and against 1.d4 I like the Nimzo/Bogo Indians. What should I play against 1.Nf3 and 1.c4 that would fit this repertoire? I'm rated 1960 in the U.S. chess federation and I would like to break into the 2000s or maybe even 2200 some day. I don't like studying openings much and would like to keep my repertoire simple as possible without playing something dubious. I want something that will grow with me and will be good if I do manage to reach master strength or beyond.

Against 1.c4 I suggest the 1...c5 and then Nf6, e6, the hedgehog setup. It is a solid setup played by top players too.

Hello, I am a young 1700 USCF player with lots of study materials. Is there any sort of wall players typically hit? If so, when and how do you break through? Also is there any advice you could give to this rating class?

I think everybody has his own walls and on different levels. You should find in which type of positions and in which way you lose and you need to correct the mistakes. I suggest you to study endgames deeper and work on tactics at least 20 minutes a day!

Can you plz suggest plans for both sides in the follwing position

White to move

?

White should attack on the kingside by pushing the g- and h-pawns and attacking the black king. Black should attack the white king on the half open c-file and by pushing the a- and b-pawns to open up the position in front of the white king.

what to do when i absolutely have no idea on what move to make?

You should think about to find a move which improves at least one of your pieces. Example you put a knight to the center or you put a piece to a square where it controls more sqaures.

It is ok, but I suggest to study master games and then start to play the first move which you liked in the games you studied.
