Simple ogre, you can have two goals.

hes the average youtuber with chess being the main theme.

his content is not well designed, its effortless, basically no editing, same repetitive content, etc.

theres a lot of really good chess channels out there that make good content with proper analysis that dont just go for drama and shock value without actually putting in effort to make that drama and shock value integral in the video.

His main recommendation, c5 against advance Caro (botvinnik-carls) is not the best, and certainly not the mainline (bf4) but it still is practical and scores well for intermediates like me.

c5 has been becoming popular recently. I was at k12 nationals last weekend, and I saw IM Anthony He (2460) play it against IM Arthur Guo (2509). He (the last name) lost, but I don't think it was due to opening. Also, it was quite interesting - Guo played a strange line based off of an early Qg4.

I played the same line (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.dxc5 e6 5.Qg4!?) in a recent correspondence game, which is currently at move 28, and white has a pretty good advantage (although winning is another story). This Qg4 idea comes from Nimzowitz, and the French advance- in the Caro you are something like one tempo up.

Black is OK after 5.a3, which is currently the main line.

I like Levy. He's like any other YouTuber in that some of his videos are good and some are not worth finishing. I especially like that he highlights lower-rated players because it can definitely be beneficial to someone in that rating range if they're looking for a fun way to improve.

You like it when he laughs and curses at you in Guess the Elo? I doubt much instructional value is actually provided in most of his videos.

I mean I would assume you don't like his humor. His recap videos are pretty good. But his general audience is much weaker than 1700 rapid.

Humor is subjective, and everyone has their own type. His ribbing and cursing is funny to me.

To me, Levy cursing over a board game is only testament to his immaturity.

Cursing and insulting people for no reason and using ad hominem attacks is immature. Cursing for no reason is not immature. A lot of people get that mixed up. Cursing in and of itself is perfectly a-okay, IMO.

Yeah, maybe his humor is just not appealing to me. His recaps are quite decent most of the time. It is true that his videos are designed for beginner-intermediate level, so that a 1000 rated player can be astonished with Magnus's dominant playstyle, and intermediate players can learn some more about middlegame strategy. Levy doesn't delve into the advanced concepts in the depth other channels do, that's for sure. But I guess Levy is a good teacher for the majority of chess players. meh.png

Yeah, actually...I do. If my chess game sucks, then it's appropriate to say so. It's all part of the growing process.

But what do you think Levy wants more? Yelling and cursing at you to help you improve or to entertain his viewers? Ooh, that's deep!

About as deep as a bird bath, maybe. It doesn't take a GM to know he's out to entertain as well. happy.png

You people always make it out to seem like trying to make money is a bad thing. It’s his fricken job. No duh he wants to make money, and he does that by entertaining his viewers. Helping people improve at chess is the job description, but you work to make money. Are you going to shame somebody because they’re trying to make a living?
