Do You Play Better Over The Board Or Virtually?

You’re not in control otb the same way you are online. Firstly, you can’t get a game at the click of a finger whether it’s casual or graded but instead you have to wait until it’s ‘your turn’. Secondly, you are facing your opponent in the flesh and blood which is hard to just simply ignore and that comes with its own pressures which obviously is never a factor online. Lastly, you’re dealing with a chunky 3D board with no sound effects and requires you to pick up and move the pieces around the board spatially. It may be the same game but the experience is totally foreign from one another and you can not just translate one into the other without an equal’ish amount of experience in both which takes years.

No comparison...OTB

blueemu

Almost all of my "big games" were OTB.

I play good in both situations but chess is better in real life...

My performance in real life chess board is at least 90% of my abilities in every game. But in online chess, I don't think at least 20% of my abilities are used. Can you tell me the reason for this?

Khupiscus

Normally I play great otb with a few blunders. I usually make ties and wins and have a low loss ratio. BUT WHEN I PLAY ONLINE THESE PEOPLE ARE CRAZY FOR NO REASON!

I find that I do better over the board. I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it's being able to actually see my opponent, and I can read their body language and adapt using that?

What it comes down to for me is when you play online you cannot see the other person what they are looking at or the reactions when you move towards certain pieces then don't move them. Playing online just takes half the actual game away. You can practice some moves ect but it just missing something.

Definitely over the board. And not just chess either. For me any board game is much more enjoyable in person.

Grievious

Better OTB because they can't check Stockfish.

Yep....i get the spend the 4th of July weekend at a chess tournament.  Surrounded by chess players, friends, and no one that will be asking about counting threads, what opening should i play?  "Im 11....what should my rating be?"  and "My opponent cheated."  It will be such a welcome change.

Sounds like you need to work on focus and not being distracted.  Actually,  i'm thinking OTB would be worse for you with that logic.   Better play in a library lmao.  Oh wait ,  that is probably what your chess tournament is exactly like  lol.

I have seen your posts.  And i will leave it at that.

I personally think I play a lot better over the board. When I play online, it's a little bit easier to just treat chess like a videogame and not take it as seriously. But when there's another person across from me, I feel like I have more pressure/incentive to think things all the way through

SrijanSaha014

I like OTB but play better in online

brithepie

I prefer over the board because it's a game that is supposed to be enjoyed together, with your opponent. I feel like that is missing from online play. I still enjoy online play though but feels very distant.

neatgreatfire

I can't focus online unless there are stakes. If I go into a classical game online I'll play hundreds of points lower than my actual rating simply because I can't focus enough. If I'm playing for a team or there's something else actually motivating me to win such as qualification for a different tournament or prizes I'll be able to focus.

gideon_drag

i can focus more OTP everytime but i think I m better in online

I personally can beat 1400-1500 blitz players over the board, and if you check my account, you'll see my rating is 600. I have no idea how it's different, but I like over the board better.
