Do you prefer to play with Black or White pieces?

Why?

I personally prefer start with black pieces .

1. I think it gives physiological edge , as many people think they have an edge already and they are relaxed more.

2. I can see in a few first moves if player is good or not.

3. If you win, you eliminate any excuses, such as you were playing white that's why, let me play white now bla bla bla ... you put full stop straight away.

What about you?

White pieces, because then I play an english game, and I hate going against queen's pawn...

I prefer black only because i have put some effort into learning about the French defence, and the the Scotch opening. I play these openings, or lines that transpose into similar positions, almost exclusively. I feel safer and more in control in the closed positions from the French. I can lean on my familiarity with the positions and surprises in the middle game are limited. Whereas the scotch game usually results in a wide open middle game, and my deficient tactics ability often gets the best of me.

I slightly prefer Black, because there is (theoretically) a little more opportunity to recognize and learn more about the nuances of time, punishing passive play, taking over the initiative, and defense.

I like both equally. I wish chess.com kept statistics on which color I win with most. Then extra tempo is not likely that helpful at out level. Being White just means having more choice in choosing an opening you are comfortable with. Grandmasters can keep a tempo edge.

  • White 142 (56.8%) 97 (38.8%) 11 (4.4%)
  • Black 142 (57%) 97 (39%) 10 (4%)

I did not notice before. I guessed it would not make much difference at my rating, but I had no idea it would be that close to zero difference.
