Do you think chess is a form of gambling?

More often, chess is not played with Money at stake. But many chess players put lot of Time at stake, because of chess. In that sense, it is similar to gambling

For me, it's not gambling.

Gambling is all about luck, and chess is about tactics, strategy, evaluation, and other skills

Does it make a person lose sense of his rational reasoning, due to urge of his ego ?

eating skittles is also gambling for me then!

assassin3752

imma take a gamble by breathing one 0.01 nanosecond later than I usually do

darlihysa

Chess itself is not a form of gambling. It's based on pure strategy and betting is not part of the rules. However, I do believe certain personalities are susceptible to online chess binges which could be likened to the thrill of gambling—Not in the sense of winning or losing money, but more so in the sense of chasing the "high" of win streaks and elo gained. The "high" is inevitably accompanied by "lows" (losing streaks) and what feels like "bad luck." The compulsion to continue, "just break even", not being able to quit, and losing one's sense of reasoning, are what makes it problematic. I doubt this gambling-like behaviour is caused by ego, as you say, but rather by personality and dopamine rushes.

In short, chess is not a form of gambling but it can cause some individuals to exhibit behaviours of someone with a gambling disorder.

If you can consider chess.com a gamble just because there's better or worse, literally everything is a gamble then

Like just tell us what made you think of gambling instead of randomly shooting something out and making us make the question.

At the very least it's a gamble with uncertainty, and a gamble with where you are on the skill ladder

You are almost there!
In essence it is your own decision - if it is a gambling or not.
Read Ecclesiastes 12:12. The same applies to chess or anything else. No one is entitled to address you but the Creator. Follow the ways of your heart and whatever your eyes see, but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.
Read Ecclesiastes 11:9, and also the whole Bible, it is where you find the answer.

I play chess very often and is that different from gambling. I have never played chess for money.

Does gambling means only that which involves Money or playing for Money?

This is where it gets tricky.

I will ask an interesting question. A young talented person of 10 years decides to take up Chess as a career. Do you think it is gamble or big risk? I will call that as a gamble. Just because it involves a lot of risks compared to other professions.

To cut it short, gambling is something which is very risky. Chess is like gambling in the sense that it is wrong to pursue something which is prone to risk and complicated, hence not proven safe. This is my considered view. But it is highly debatable.

You play chess for the joy of experience it brings but that does not mean chess is all good. In my view, if chess does more good than bad for a player, then chess is not gambling. Otherwise it is.

Agree to a certain extent. See my reply on why chess is akin to gambling with respect to risks involved.

Yes, for me at least. I am down $1500 as of today.

But there are also guns, drugs, climate change, pollution, war, nukes, cigarette.

I get why some people see a gambling aspect in chess, especially with money on the line in bets or tournaments. But at its core, chess is pure skill—no luck involved like in classic gambling. If you're into strategy games and want to challenge yourself in different ways, https://rizzy.com/ has cool options to explore.

MakiDaKing

No,there is no luck,only brain.

JJLuigi_1

Chess isn't gambling, it is an INTELECSHUAL ACTIVITY 🤓
