Do you think Gm should be changed to SGM

Should it

Why would it be?

For super grandmaster

Maybe SGM if you pass 2700 and hold it for x number of tournaments. In the USCF they award the title of Life Master if you have the 2200 rating after 200 tournaments. Right now, the moniker of SGM is not an official FIDE title, but maybe it should become one.

To clarify above- Life Master has to earn 2200, and finish 200 tournaments at or above 2200 to earn the LM title.

It’s pointless. There’s absolutely no need for it. Everyone already knows who they are so the unofficial “title” is good enough.

What on earth is gained from it?

Yes, I'd love to see the super GM title introduced.

We have titles which separate 2200's from 2300's from 2400's from 2500's... why isn't there a title separating 2500's from 2800's when the skill difference between them is huge?

Same thing we gain for any other title?

It gives people something to work for. And it distinguishes the true elites from the rest.

But then we'd also need BGM (BarelyGrandMaster), UGM (UberGrandMaster), SGMIJS (SoGrandMasterlyIt'sJustSick) and so on.

No, they should just demote a thousand or two GMs to IM.

Then we would need FGM (FormerGrandMaster) titles.

@deranged. Everyone already knows who the truly elite are. They are already trying to get to the top. You think some title will make them work 9 hours a day on chess instead of 8? We already use the term so making it official does nothing but cheapen the accomplishments of GMs and make them feel like their lifetime of work wasn’t worth as much.

No.  We need to stop with the need to constantly label things.  If you play chess then you know what a GM is.  If you dont, then you dont.

So what is next?  Frozen peas, and then super frozen peas?

Ice Cream?  And really super cold frozen ice cream?

Its all the same thing, no matter what you call it.

But in order to be "fair" and "all inclusive" we could give "feel good" titles to the average everyday players.  Instead of USCF C players, they could be renamed:  USCF "You're really good,.  Keep up the good work"

USCF D Players could be renamed: "You're improvement is awesome!"

USCF B Players could be renamed: "Wow...you're getting really good, and the sky's the limit!"

USCF A players could be renamed.  Nah...by the time you're here, you know where you stand and dont need any of that feel good stuff to motivate you.

I think the Bishop should be renamed "Diagonally-Moving-Super-Pointy-Bishop".

Hmmmm...I dont know about that.  By using the term "diagonally moving"  You're not being "all inclusive"  Those that identify as "horizontally moving" will be offended and feel left out.

Using the term "Super" will cause those with low esteem issues to feel left out.  Again, you're not being "all inclusive"

"Pointy" is a no no too.  It gives the illusion of danger.  Pointy things can poke eyes out.  Those with learning disabilities will feel left out.

"Bishop" can now also be labeled taboo, as it forces beliefs on people.

You're gonna have to come up with something else.

Make it context dependent: a very bad Bishop could be an Acolyte and a Knight could be a Lame Pony or a Shining Unicorn.

'Master' is a classic term, and so are the prefixes such as 'grand', 'candidate', etc.

'Super' is contemporary. Contemporary terms need to survive at least a few centuries before they can be considered.

I think GM is good! But, if it did change, I wouldn't mind.

WSama

Also, the term 'grand' is finalizing. It would sort of defeat the purpose adding anything after it.

But, a numerical ranking or grading system wouldn't hurt so bad. Such as 1st level Grand Master, etc.

Good point!
