Do you think that chess players generally are rude?

People on the internet are rude.  It has to do with anything that mixes private and public space.  They feel free to vent in the privacy of their own home and don't think about how public it really is.  Very similar to how people road-rage in cars when they would never do that just walking down the street.

Of course I wouldn't road rage walking down the street in my car.  I only wish I could take my car for walks like that.  On a very related note I wish I got more sleep last night.  Yes, it is related dig deep.

"So has that answered your question"?, thats the best responseCool Alot of creativity in the answers and the way it is approached if the left one does not get the job done the right one will!

I always say "hello" in my chats, and also let them know when I'm going off line if we are having a series of moves. There is truth to" killing them with kindness"! And when that doesn't work? I tell them I hope they grow up soon, and disconnect my chat box!!lol There is no point to lowering yourself to their demented behavior. They seem to feed on aggravating you, so don't give it to them! Because it will effect how you play them, and may cause unnecessary errors! The majority of players I have met are NORMALLaughing!

Wait, that last sentence killed it for me.  While I don't believe chess players to be aholes(although some are of course...I mean have u been listening to me?).  I do not believe you can be "normal" and be a chess player.  You have to have at least a little eccentricism(sure its a word) to play this game, I believe.

Yeah, I do.  Emphasis should have been placed on the last sentence.

My personal experience is that most chess players are nice people. However, a few rude persons can really spoil the fun. When I lived in Florence (Italy) I started going to the local chess club. I had quite fun until a candidate master there, during a tournament, heard me laugh (very quietly) from a distance. For no reason at all he thought that I was laughing at a blunder he had made. He resigned and started shouting at me! I am not a delicate flower and, working as university professor, I am used to fighting with wierd people with big fragile egos. Chess, however, is a hobby. I do it to relax and have fun. This episode ruined it for me, as the candidate master started from then on to stare at me with hatred whenever I went to the club. I quit going. Now I have recently moved to Gothenburg (Sweden) and I have contacted SS Manhem, a club with a good reputation. I'll se how things will go there (fingers crossed).

The internet has changed things. In my days of correspondence chess people were polite and pleasant.  Most people are today but there is a significant number of people who like to just troll. I think it makes them feel important?

When I was playing my 15 minute games a good percentage- when coming to a losing postion- would disconnect.  Some would ask for a take back.

[and continue asking]  some would repeatedly ask for a draw.

Not the same as "the old days" when everyone was polite and courteous.
