Ghostess Lola has mentioned Duncan Suttles sometimes if I'm not wrong, because of his fondness of A00 openings.

Is there a dog sled race in Canada? If that's made into an Olympic sports I thought they may excel at it. Although there'll face fierce competition from the Alaskans (Americans) who've been doing Iditarod for years.

It is possible for there to be a canadian world champion. In this day and age we have a Norwegian World champion and decades ago it would never have crossed our minds and by the way how many grandmasters from Norway do we know ? Has it ever won a single olympiad ? and yet we have a norwegian world champion. When that happens i wonder if the canadian world chess champion would topple Bret" the Hitman" Hart off his perch as the most famous canadian.

I'm pretty sure there's a few grandmasters from Canada. Only a few though. I think 6 or so last I saw. 1/10th the population of the states so makes sense I suppose.

Boris Blumin, z"l, Canadian Champion 1936 and 1937 was happy to say he once visited World Champion Alexander Alekhine in his hotel room and played him chess.   That may be the closest a Canadian comes to playing a World Champion one on one......though that was just "fun chess".

I sure hope so. I luv Duncan Suttles. He's one of the most creative players of all time. He's may be the only GM in both Correspondence and Classical play.

His annotations in "No Regrets (Seirawan)" are awesome....Smile....

There is also Ulf Andersson, Nikolai Ninov and Valentin Iotov.

Ulf "the wolf" stopped CC when engines became a serious factor in correspondence chess.

Delerium

Skinny Puppy

Conjure One

Gordon Lightfoot

Noise Unit

Balligomingo

All Canadian, all great!

The odds are against it, since Canada has a relatively small population and also lacks a strong, well financed chess establishment. But talent can arise anywhere, so it's certainly not impossible.

That's right now.

If there's still going to be a WC match in 200 years, Canada may yet win it.
