We're not trying to determine whether chess engines are free or deserve civil rights . Autonomy in and of itself is not relevant to the concept of "understanding" something. An indentured servant has no autonomy, yet they can still figure out how a shovel works.
I wasn't talking about rights Einstein.
...and yet, you used a word that is defined as the right or condition of self government, Sherlock . Why would someone/something that gains autonomy suddenly become more or less capable of understanding something? You are looking for a different/better word. Autonomy and the visible results thereof may be an indirect indicator of many things...self awareness, intelligence, imagination, planning, etc. but it actually proves or causes none of those things.
Synonyms of "autonomy":
accord, choice, free will, self-determination, volition, will, freedom, independence, liberty, self-determination, self-governance, sovereignty
...note the lack of "understanding", "knowledge", or "independent thought" in the list of synonyms.
You can teach a blind man to play chess in his head, having never seen or touched actual chess pieces. Purely through description. Does this mean they would not be capable of understanding the game either? Your argument is typical of a person brought up watching too many movies and absorbing too many stereotypes about the failings of machines/computers/robots vs. human beings (movies which are made to prey upon human fears of losing primacy in their world ...).
A numerical value is not any better or worse a way to represent the logical construct that chess represents than any other descriptors.
The most simple way to word this is an engine like Stockfish isn't autonomous. Until AI are autonomous, or a chess engine is produced that is autonomous, then an engine will never understand chess. understanding isn't something that exists, until something has autonomy. The engine has been programmed to perform a task. In chess, that task includes analysing where to move these "pieces" which are all represented by a numerical value, in order to achieve a result they are programmed to achieve, which for us, is getting the best possible result in a chess game. Keep in mind that for an engine this isn't "The best possible result", they are searching for, they are just completing a task, DESCRIBED, by humans as the best possible result.
