It tends to go up over time, and candidates tournaments tend to have higher average ratings since the lowest rated player is ~2700 and wont bring the average down.
Which is to say... you say you think there are tournaments with higher averages, but probably not. This year is probably in the top 3 if not #1.
The lowest rating in this year's candidates is 2750, which is Duda. I think that's good. There shouldn't be a player far separated in rating from the other 7 players.
Sometimes the wildcard is not very good. I remember that Russian guy they let in a year or two ago was barely 2700 (or maybe even below it). Alekseenko or something.
I wanted them to let MVL in as wildcard, but it turns out he wasn't Russian, and they only give it to Russians 
Yeah, I was a bit annoyed at Alekseenko being in it. He was officially 2698 at the start of it.
At least the bottom rated player this time is 2750.

Thanx but I got that covered, it's in the 1st post. I was just wondering how high this one ranks among all the candidates tournaments as far as average strength. I guess one of the top ones. 1776 is a high average, I can't imagine any being higher, if so, it couldn't have been much higher.
The average for this year's event based on current ratings and with the assumption that Ding Liren will be the replacement for Karjakin is 2776.
Have there been higher averages for the candidates? I'm sure there are tournaments with higher averages but I'm just curious about the candidates.
