Does anyone know when Magnus is playing next? Or will he pull a Fischer now?!

I hadn't thought about it. I'd rather just relax & drink my beer. It was just a general hunch based on reading the threads over the last year, since right before last years candidates tournament.

The answer to the OP question is in 2 yrs. It runs in 2 yr cycles.

I think FIDE has changed the whole schedule now where there is a world championship match every year. The candidates tournament in March will decide his challenger in November. Then they do it all again next year. I'm pretty sure that's how it is now. I was asking in my original post about his next tournament. I've found out now, it starts in a couple of days. I'm just wondering if he will show up super strong or lazy & out of playing shape. It will be interesting to see what happens with Anand in that tournament too.

Zurich will only be 5 rounds??! WTF?! Oh well, it's just a mini tournament. Does anyone know when Magnus' first real tournament will be?

MrDamonSmith

I think he's going on tv more than others. He seems to be likable in the shows I've seen him on (60 minutes, Colbert Report, some others I can't think of the names of). I believe that exposure is good for attracting not just more players but possible sponsorship because advertisers value viewership & any player that can attract an audience will help push chess tournaments into the mainstream.

MrDamonSmith

I think brief exposure will prompt people into looking further into chess. They might see Magnus for 5 minutes & look him up online out of curiosity & pursue chess like people did during the Fischer era. A LOT of players say they started because they were following the Fischer - Spassky match. Well now there's the internet so even brief exposure on a comedy show will accomplish more than it did 20, 30, 40 years ago.

Right. Cha-ching! I just like saying that. Well typing it actually, but saying it is even better.

There seem to be about two or three anti-Carlsen topics started every single day on this site.

They are made by sockpuppets and trolls who loved to cause troubles.

I think a better question is, what is Magnus Carlsen going to do to help the game of chess overall? (or)

Will Magnus Carlsen be able to help the game of chess?

Carlsen is promoting chess by playing exhibition games with celebrities. He played Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Bill Gates of Microsoft already. Who would be next? Maybe Justin Beiber Cool

playing in jail or rehab. Won't look good for Carlsen.

The Beibster. That would be funny. The Beibster of chess plays the Beibster himself. I can see the titles to the articles now.

The titles of the chess.com threads would be something like:

"Is Carlsen REALLY helping chess by playing those `celebrities`?"

then the post would be something like "even if Carlsen get to the mainstream media by doing that, is really the people like Bieber´s fans that we want as chessplayers? can you imagine crowds of girls in the open tournaments with music in her "ipads" and screaming everytime they recognize a GM? Is that helpful? Well, what can we expect from somebody that dropout from school"

And probably from a new account.

MrDamonSmith

They are only playing 5 slow games. But still, it was only a few days ago they finished Tata.

Maybe he should pull a Han Solo
