If you become a titled player, you'll have to prove it every time at the board. Titled players are committed to the game.

I was once just two good games away from being a master. At the time I wasn't too concerned, cos I was sure I'd get more chances. Then life got in the way.

I'd love to try again and see how close I could come to getting that title without keeling over from the stress. I will be happy if I ever break 2200.

I always have wanted to become a titled player. When i am not completely intoxicated, I show real promise in my chess games. I have beaten some extra ordinary players in my life some online and some over the board in Santa Monica Beach California ....  One Master level Player  ( In Bullet )  Game results were 1 win 1 loss 1 draw ....I will out of respect leave his  name out. But he frequents the tables at the beach and those there when it took place know what's up. Live no mouse slip ... No excuses!!!  Anyway . I'm a mommy with way too much stuff to do and way too high on Mexican Tequila to give it a shot at 30 something . Nice question OP

Never to late!!! The more I learn about chess and it increase my enjoyment, to see opportunity that others miss or just to  understand a move better than my opponent. Chess is worth pursuing to become a master, it like achieving the world cup. :)

To quote wikipedia,

  • Grandmaster (abbreviated as GM, sometimes International Grandmaster or IGM is used) is awarded to world-class chess masters. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Before FIDE will confer the title on a player, the player must have an Elo chess rating (see below) of at least 2500 at one time and three favorable results (called norms) in tournaments involving other Grandmasters, including some from countries other than the applicant's. There are also other milestones a player can achieve to attain the title, such as winning the World Junior Championship.
  • International Master (abbreviated as IM). The conditions are similar to GM, but less demanding. The minimum rating for the IM title is 2400.
  • FIDE Master (abbreviated as FM). The usual way for a player to qualify for the FIDE Master title is by achieving a FIDE Rating of 2300 or more.
  • Candidate Master (abbreviated as CM). Similar to FM, but with a FIDE Rating of at least 2200.

I want to reach 1600-1700 level in a 10 years period, I wonder if that goal is realistic or it is too much to achieve.

i am strong enough to be a titled player, but have not yet gathered all my needed norms to become that titled player. As a result,i am still seen as a non-titled player.
