Does chess make you a better person?

CaribbeanChess
Great contributions, my friends! This is really helpful.

Another reason I’m asking is because I’m teaching my 4 year old how to play. Every time I teach a principle I want to double it as a life lesson to make him a deeper thinker who makes better decisions **in general**.

Thanks for chiming in.

With this new context does anything else come to mind?

no it doesnt. chess is nothing but a game. I mean seriously would you ask does boxing or pole vaulting or even monoploy make you a better person. Use your head

If your goal is to teach your child to concentrate on an issue including the consequences of an action, then certainly chess is useful. A "better" person? hum ... that is a bit vague.

Because of chess I started to think all the variations and possible responses by a girl when i approach her and i never kissed one because of it.

So , basically chess ruined my life.

Life is an Open Tournament. Expect Competition and Rivalry from anyone... Majority from Peers but expect unusual rivals in the form of family and close friends. And one last and important thing to remember. Don't expect all your rivals and competitors would play Fair.. because you play fair. You can't tell the lion not to eat you... because you don't eat lions.

You didn't study Queen endgames. Opening theory and middle game strategy are useless.

Love the new contributions! Thanks peeps.

Also, for those who are new to this thread, the title was clickbait Lol. It doesn’t make you a “better person” but it can teach some life lessons.

Just started reading Kasparov’s book. It’s a game changer. “How Life Imitates Chess”

He’s transitioned to business and politics and talks about how he was able to use the principles and strategies from chess to be more strategic and make better decisions in the real world.

Fascinating read!

I do not know that chess makes you a better person. but for me it gives you a place to put your mind. a place to calm down. which i suppose could make you slightly calmer so maybe so mentally but physically no.

I disagree. International Master Bacon goes to church and is just.

It can’t make you a better person but can it help you by leading you to think more strategically day to day?

If you guys have some insight on that I’d appreciate it.
