Does Chess Make You Dumber?

Another forum about whether chess makes one "smarter" or "dumber?"  OK, let's at least agree that "dumb" is different from "ignorant."   So playing chess, like engaging in any activity, takes time away from learning other things that could increase one's general fund of knowledge, but knowledgable doesn't mean intelligent..

The only way to get "dumber" is to get brain damage.  Rugby can make you dumber.  Chess only makes you dumber if you decide to hold a tournament in your driveway and you fall out of your folding chair and hit your head on the concrete.  (And if you decided to play chess in your driveway sitting on a folding chair, no offense, but you might not have been the sharpest tool in the shed to begin with.)  

but you see motherinlaw, it was chess that caused the tournament to be played in the driveway.

Oh I really hope this is not the case I'm at university and need to get smarter not dumber thats why I started chess again!!!!!

Well, congratulations on wanting to do well at university!  And I assure you that while chess won't make you smarter, reading the posts in these forums will increase your  intelligence to levels you never imagined possible!    (You can see what these forums have done for me .... I stopped playing chess in my driveway weeks ago.) 

Thanks motherinlaw I am just really hoping I can improve as I havent played in ages and really want to get to a good level so will see how I go. Any tips from anyone would be really appreciated I think I need a mentor or tuition maybe. Mia xx

Thanks, that was a good lesson for me ... I had Not considered that possibility! Also, I'm wondering, might this story be actually based on true events?  Could it have happened to someone you know?  Even... well, you?
