does chess mentor help?

i got a trial premium membership and have been trying chess mentor out. However the lessons mostly seem to be either TT puzzles with a short blurb on the history of the game, or an opening where im basically guessing the main moves to because I dont play it. I fail to see the use of either of these.

Chess Mentor seemed to me to be just more tactics too.

Not sure about the chess mentor...

But in terms of learning the game, failing to see the use of things is usually why people fail to learn.

That was deep!

Usefulness varies widely between the individual courses. The opening-related stuff and the tactics compilations didn't do much for me, but I really liked some of the strategy lessons.

Ultimately it's a matter of personal preference, though.

Conflagration_Planet

Most of the lessons were geared for higher rated players than me.

yeah, im sure theyre useful for some people, maybe if somehow people could select openings they play so as to avoid pointless stuff. For example a recent one started from a position in the kings indian attack, something like this from memory:

I then had to guess the next 5 theoretical continuations, which doesnt help me at all in any way. Neither are they positionally educational, tactical or in any way relevant to my repetoire.

Which lesson order are you using, sequential or adaptive? If you're using adaptive, you might want to try setting it to sequential and then manually selecting your courses. That should prevent it from trying to force-feed you useless crap.

ok, thank you
