Does chess still relates to present time?

I had a sudden thought whether chess still relates with present time or society like it did in past. By this I mean that how do we know if someone is a king or pawn in today's world and if they are a king how do they know if they are not a pawn in someone else's game.

There are video games of dungeons and dragons, kings and knights so why not chess?
